Anchor

A few days ago, the verse of the day on the Bible app was Hebrews 6:19 which says:

“This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary.” - Hebrews 6:19 (NLT)

I thought about that verse for a few minutes and God gave me a message loud and clear. What God told me started with a question and I present that question to you now.

What is the purpose of an anchor? So I began to think about that. An anchor is used to keep a boat or any other kind of vessel from drifting away by the current of a body of water. Dictionary.com defines an anchor as:

“any of various devices dropped by a chain, cable, or rope to the bottom of a body of water for preventing or restricting the motion of a vessel or other floating object, typically having broad, hook like arms that bury themselves in the bottom to provide a firm hold.” [1]

I don’t know about you, but when I read that definition I get a really good image of an anchor. When a ship runs into some trouble, whether it be a storm, rough waters, just a need to hold a position in the water, or to hold the ship in dock, an anchor provides the ship with the ability to hold ground and not drift away. The job of the anchor is to make sure that ship stays in one place.

As I thought more about what I described above and what the words of Hebrews 6:19 says, I began to see another great image - an image of Jesus. Just like the verse says. God just dropped the image of Jesus being our anchor. It is Jesus that keeps us from going adrift when things come up in our life. Jesus is that anchor that keeps us from being carried away by the storms of life. Jesus is the anchor that holds fast does not let go.

But sometimes we anchor ourselves to things that will fail us. Money will fail us. Relationships will fail us. Status will fail us. We can even fail us. Anxiety can get the better of us. Fear can get the better of us. Worry can get the better of us. And it is in those moments when things fail us and we start to drift. We start to drift out into open waters or the storms of life carry us away because we are not anchored to something that holds fast.

Jesus is the anchor that will never fail. Jesus holds fast and doesn’t let go. If we have Jesus as our anchor, we can’t be carried away by the storms of life. If we have Jesus as our anchor we can know that no matter what storms come up in life - they can’t get the better of us because we have a trustworthy anchor. We have an anchor that won’t let go
